Sometimes a support system can make all the difference in maintaining a workout routine and falling off the fitness wagon. Unfortunately, all of us are not blessed with our own personal fitness community, a group of friends as dedicated to becoming fit and active as we are trying to be. Luckily for everyone, social media has provided some unique opportunities to engage with other fitness enthusiast, even for niche interest such as barefoot running! Please allow me to introduce you to me latest discovery—twitter chats, particularly fitness twitter chats.

What are twitter chats?

A twitter chat is an interactive conversation about a particular topic on twitter via the use of a common hashtag. For instance, say there was a weekly twitter chat called #dogloversunite hosted Mondays at 8 pm. Mondays on 8 pm, a moderator would propose a specific topic for dog lovers to discuss and dog lovers all over twitter would engage in the conversation via the hashtag #dogloversunite, and by searching the hashtag they would be able to see all of the tweets marked for the conversation and engage even with twitter users they didn’t already follow.

Why should you participate in fitness twitter chats?

It is a great way to trade your favorite workouts, tips, trick, and motivation with other fitness enthusiasts. Personally, I love to use it as a great way to hear all of the latest fitness news and learn about popular new workout gear. It’s also a great way to find fun new accounts to follow and maybe pick up some new followers of your own.

Which should you follow?

My favorite fitness twitter chats are:

#Fitblog: This is a general health and fitness chat. The topic changes every week, but it is a good place to find interesting articles, fitness tips, and motivation to hit the gym. It is weekly, Tuesday at 9 pm.

#Runchat : I’m currently training for a half marathon, so of course I have begun following some running twitter chats! This one is held at 8 pm on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month.

There are more out there, so if you’re interested feel free to look for more. I even saw one solely for barefoot running! Don’t wait, join in the conversation.
